How do I become a member?

The short answer is, come to our events!

The long answer:

HacDC Membership

Here at HacDC, we creatively rethink technology and we want to build a community of talented and smart engineers, artisans, tinkers, and programmers. Our community is dedicated to

  • Building and maintaining spaces suitable for technical and social collaboration.
  • Collaboration on all forms of technology, culture and craft in new and interesting ways.
  • Applying the results of our work to specific cultural, charitable and scientific causes.
  • Freely sharing our research and discoveries, using what is learned to teach others.
  • Increasing our community by recruiting and developing talented people dedicated to these purposes.

We are looking for smart and talented people dedicated to these purposes and invite them to become part of HacDC.

  1. Sign up to pay your $50 monthly member dues:

DO NOT FORGET TO READ THE FINE PRINT: Membership dues are not considered tax-deductible because of the tangible benefit of being able to work in the space. Dues payments by those who do not become official members at a future date shall be considered tax-deductible donations. Payment of dues does not automatically confer membership or voting rights. Dues payments are recurring, it is the responsibility of the person initiating payment to cancel or reschedule any future recurring payments. Those who have a strong objection to using PayPal for payment of member dues or wish to apply for a dues waiver (granted only in extreme circumstances) must contact finance@hacdc.org to arrange alternative methods of payment. We use PayPal because it is well known in the community, so we do not need to keep member checks, cash or bank or credit card account information lying around and becuase the Minister of Finance would rather work on projects than badger our members for their dues each month.

Wow! Lots of responses to Parts Party announcement!

We’ve received a lot of great questions and responses to our Parts Party announcement!  Since we announced it with such short notice, please dont’ hesitate to e-mail info@hacdc.org with any questions you have.  (Actually, never hesitate to contact us, we love to hear from you!)

Many of you have asked if we will take old electronics, CRTs, etc.  Yes!  We will!  We will take almost anything we can carry up the stairs.  (Be forewarned, we don’t have an elevator and it’s two flights of stairs up to our space.  We will have able bodied people on hand to carry things up, but things that weigh more than 100 KG/220 lbs. might be a bit of a stretch even for us!)  To you, it might be junk, but to us it’s raw materials we can use to start working on our projects!

However, we really, really need tools and equipment that we can use to test, repair and disassemble the things you’re bringing us.  If you have spare:

  • Electronic test/repair and disassembly equipment (multimeter, probe, signal tracer, soldering irons…that old oscilloscope that really needs a new home *hint* *hint*, etc.)
  • Hand tools (Files, Screwdrivers, Pliers, ratchet wrenches, etc.)
  • Power tools (drills, dremel tools, saws, etc.)
  • Other random equipment, working or non-working (microscopes, enlargers, centrifuges, etc.)

We will also have food and beverages available, but we always welcome more!

Most importantly, even if you don’t have anything, stop by to meet us!  We’re building this space for our community.  Those who get involved determine where the space will go.  We organized this space to be member-driven

We’re looking forward to seeing you on Sunday!  If you can’t make it, but want to get involved, let us know!

Pre-Grand Opening Parts Party this Weekend!

Come to our first public event this Sunday!

April 27 from 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM (or possibly later!)

1525 Newton St NW, (located within the St Stephen & Incarnation Church).

Cost:    FREE, but please bring a tool/furniture/electronic scrap to donate!

Why:    We started HacDC to give the Washington DC area a place to make, build, disassemble, code, learn and do all the awesome things you can do in a “hacker space”.  Like nycresistor.com in New York and thehacktory.org in Philly, DC now has its own collaboration and creative space, HacDC!  However, we can’t do it without your support.  We rely on you!

How:  Bring something you think our space would need (and can be carried up the stairs ourselves–no elevator!):

  • Tools!  (Power tools, electronic test equipment, soldering irons, etc.)
  • Furniture (especially folding chairs and shelving!)
  • Electronics (working and non-working things we can disassemble!)
  • Food and Beverages (to keep people going while working on projects!)

Enjoy the party!  Dissassemble something!  Learn how to pick and secure your own locks!  Throw a demo of your own making.

We’re also looking for charter members, people who are dedicated to building a stronger DIY/Hacker community in DC.  We are a non-profit DC organization seeking 501(c)(3) status, and all of our work goes directly back into the community through educational, scientific and cultural channels.

Questions?  Comments?  Curious to know if we really want that old copy machine that’s been in your garage for the past five years? (Well, the answer to that is YES.) E-mail info@hacdc.org
