Hi my name is Tom Horne, W3TDH.   I will be speaking on How Amateur Radio can best assist the Weather Service Skywarn Program.  I will do a quick review of what weather events meet the criteria for being reported and some examples of reports that are unhelpful.  I will also review what are the positions within the Skywarn Coordinating Team that are always filled by active Skywarn participants who are also Amateur Radio Operators.

Introduction to Linux

This session will have two parts: In the first 60-90 minutes we’ll get everyone connected to a Linux terminal and go through some Linux basics: navigating and managing folders and files, searching for files and within files, finding, installing, updating and removing software packages, managing users, groups and changing passwords, etc. The second 60-90 minutes will be an open Q&A for particular questions or problems. We can also discuss Linux alternatives to popular Microsoft or Apple applications: web browsers, email clients, word processing, spreadsheet and presentation applications, messaging clients, image, audio and video editors.

Note: Please bring a laptop with WiFi or wired ethernet connectivity (Windows, Mac or Linux) as we have a limited number available.

HacDC Invited Seminar: Space Solar

Does the idea of orbiting solar panels beaming megawatts of microwave power to Earth sound like science fiction or the plot of a James Bond movie? Solar Power Satellite via Arbitrarily Large Phased Array (SPS-ALPHA) is a novel, bio-mimetic approach to the challenge of space solar power. If successful, this project will make possible the construction of huge platforms from tens of thousands of small elements that can deliver remotely and affordably thousands of megawatts of energy using wireless power transmission to markets on Earth and missions in space.
